Guide Stones or sign post were originally used
to direct travelers when they came to a fork in the road. Like Lanterns
they were introduced into the garden by ancient tea masters. Guide stones,
which can serve as a replacement for a stone lantern, are usually placed
in an open part of the park or at the fork in a path to guide visitors
through the garden. Plant low growing shrubbery around the base to create
a natural appearance and an atmosphere of quiet taste and elegant
simplicity. The text, if present, is read vertically, from the top down.
Guide stones are measured from the bottom of the shaft, where the carving
begins, to the top of the roof.
