How to Mortar Set a Pathway or Patio

First you will need to determine the size of the patio, lay it out with string & stakes, taking into consideration your stone type (dimensional or random sizes) and the pattern you will be using.

Step 2: Excavate area to the depth of approximately 6” - 10”.

Step 3: It is advised to have a 2” - 3” gravel base. Level and pack down firmly.

Step 4: You will need to pour 3” - 4” concrete, re-inforced with rebar. When concrete is beginning to set,     take a broom or rake to roughen up the surface to aid in the adhesion of the stone and mortar.

Step 5: Set stones atop mortar, leaving 1/2” joint spaces between stones. Avoid placing stones with long      lines of joints that are continuous (depending on you particular pattern you are using).
